The wood had burned to embers by the time Tor finished his tale.

“What of the hand chain?” Borgli asked.

“As always, I brought it to Vanda.” The old man was skilled at discerning the magical nature of artifacts, an ability Tor appreciated but found bewildering.

Quell rolled her eyes. “He meant to ask, ‘Was it anything special?’”

“Oh. Yes. As I understand it, the hand chain holds a unique enchantment that bolsters the magic of the wizard who wears it.”

She whistled. “I bet wizards would pay handsomely for something of that nature.”

“Or kill anyone to get their hands on it,” Koji added.

“What became of the artifact?” the dwarf asked.

“Two years later, a tall Hassakani wizard visited Vanda’s manor. To my surprise, he gave the man the hand chain and told him to use it wisely until it was time to gift it to another.” Tor recalled the visit as if it had occurred just days ago, for it was one of the strangest encounters he had experienced, which was saying something.

“What was this man’s name?”

“The wizard went by the name Chandan.”

When Chandan had departed, rather than saying goodbye, he had turned to Tor and said, “Until we meet again.” Those words had stuck with Tor as both ominous and prophetic. He wondered when he would cross paths with Chandan again.
